The Trustees of The Paula Carr Diabetes Trust are concerned about the increasing number of diabetics living in Kent who are losing limbs through diabetic neuropathy, suffering with leg ulcers and other neurovascular symptoms.

Jo Shapter a Specialist Podiatrist, whose company, East Kent Foot Care has delivered free foot care assessment clinics to the homeless in Folkestone, approached the Trustees to offer a similar service to East Kent diabetics at their clinic in Evegate Business Park.

In the three years since its inception 2,468 diabetic patients have been screened, many now returning annually, for their foot surveillance review. In that time a total of 306 patients have either been referred to NHS Podiatry Services, their own GP or received urgent on the day treatment. In addition, 1,151 attendees were made aware of either mild or severe sensory neuropathy being present and provided with advice on how to control it.

Routine nail cutting is NOT included only urgent tissue viability treatment will be given on the day if deemed necessary by the podiatry team. All results from these assessments are recorded and shared with both the patient and their GP surgery.
